I despise having a cold or the flu and when I am sick I spend most of my time resisting the fact that I am sick especially in the beginning. I deny, I complain, I whine, I struggle. What a bother!
Who the heck has time to not feel well?
I know from experience that the following Six Actions to Feeling Well can help you return back to health in a timely (at least as timely as possible) style and the bonus is that you may even gain something out of the experience.
Number 1 – Accept
Acceptance. Accepting you are sick may just be the most challenging part yet there are reasons to do this anyway.
I love this following piece regarding injuries for runners from Sakyong Mipham in his book Running with the Mind of Meditation. Sakyong applies thoughts of having acceptance and patience around injuries that may occur while running. I replaced references to injuries with being sick in this passage.
“Injuries Colds bring up many feelings, and being injured sick never comes at a convenient time. Often it happens when it is least expected. The first few moments after an injury becoming sick are important. As soon as possible, we should acknowledge that we are hurt not feeling well. Recognizing our injury symptoms is not a defeat, but rather shows courage. If we ignore an injury, being sick, recovery could take longer.
Patience could be our best friend.
Without patience, people try to run again do too much too soon and complicate their injury symptoms. Waiting out an injury a cold or flu is an excellent time to work on our meditation. I have found rehab to be a practice in itself, determining day to day how we feel and responding with the appropriate action – which may mean keeping still. We can use the time recovering from an injury a cold or flu to train our mind in gentleness and firmness.”
Now that you have accepted that you are sick and acknowledge that you need some quiet, introspective time, take that time and then Take More Action.
Number 2 – Take Action with Supplementation and Natural Cold Remedies
Ingest Vitamin C powder. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a potent antioxidant for cellular heath, immune health and has the bonus of assisting with skin health and making collagen to keep the skin looking young. In powder form, Vitamin C is very water-soluble and absorbs quickly. Another bonus is that a good, high-quality Vitamin C powder can save you money over purchasing products such as Airborne. Airborne runs about $7 per tube at my local grocer for 10 servings versus 100 servings of Vitamin C powder for $20 at my local health food supplier.
Try Elderberry Extract. Add to water and drink. Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, helps reduce coughing.
Make Ginger Tea – One of my absolute favorite teas. Ginger, Lemon, Raw Honey. Ginger helps relieve cold and flu symptoms and boost your immunity. Reduces swelling of the sinuses. Chew on a piece of ginger for a sore throat. Drinking the tea as a unique soothing bite to it for the throat.
Ginger, Lemon and Honey Tea
- 1 Fresh Organic Ginger Rhizome (sometimes called Ginger Root)
- 1 TBS Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
- 1 TBS Raw Honey
- 2 cups Water
- Step 1 Slice up 1 inch of the Ginger.
- Step 2 In a pot, heat the water with the slices of ginger until boiling. Continue to boil for a few minutes until the water is tinted yellow.
- Step 3 Meanwhile, put the lemon juice and the honey in a large mug.
- Step 4 Strain the ginger tea into the mug.
- Step 5 Stir to dissolve the honey.
- Step 6 Taste, and add more honey or lemon juice if you like.
- Step 7 Drink, relax and enjoy!
- Step 8 You can reboil the ginger in more water until it has lost it’s color.
Drink Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) or my local Northern New Mexico friends drink pickle juice. Adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, pickle juice or lemon juice, to a glass of water helps to alkalize the body, creating an alkaline environment helps kill bacteria and viruses. Start drinking it at the first sign of illness and repeat several times a day until the symptoms subside.
Water is vital. Flush your body out with a gallon of water a day if you can manage this. Drinking this much water is a stretch for some, if so for you, at least greatly increase your water consumption and decrease intake of coffee, soda, alcohol.
Number 3 – Take Action with Your Diet
Limit sugar. Sugar is bacteria generating, toxic and is causing a strain on your body, running down your immune system. This is why so many people become sick during the holidays as their sugar consumption is up, up, up and immune system is down. The only book I have read that helped me break my sugar addiction.
Dairy is a no. Avoid dairy as it causes phlegm and mucus.
Soup of course. Eat veggie soups (check sugar levels in canned soups) or homemade chicken soup.
If you’ve lost your appetite use the BART Diet for Colds and Flu – Bananas, Applesauce, Rice, Toast
Number 4 – Take Action with Your Body
Soak and relax in a hot bath with Epsom salts. Indulge daily. Purchase Epsom salts for soaking from your local grocer or pharmacy. Add at least 4 cups of Epsom salt to a hot bath to help improve circulation and reduce the length of cold and flu symptoms. “Getting a virus is the body’s way to force us to detoxify, and an Epsom salt bath is one of our favorite recommendations for a gentle detoxing.” Says Dr. Margaret Philhower, a ND from Oregon. Why not Vicks? Vicks contains petroleum jelly combined with camphor. Petroleum jelly or mineral oil has been known to cause a chronic form of pneumonia when aspirated into the lungs. People love Vick’s but do your homework! Think about ingredients. I personally will never use this product. Yuck!!!
There are better, healthier alternatives to Vick’s such as Eucalyptus or Fir essential oils. Use essential oils with a carrier such as coconut oil or scent-free massage oil on the feet, the back of the neck, and the chest. Ahhh, relief without petroleum products.
Rest, meditate, be quiet. Now is the time to allow your body to rest and get caught up on reading or binge watching. Everything on your list will wait and it’s better to rest early on.
Stretching, walking slowly and Yoga postures help. It is too much to exercise radically when we do not feel well, stretching, yoga postures, short walks to move the energy from the body.

Sound Therapy. Try listening to healing sounds or sound therapy to feel better and balance your energy. This is one of my absolute favorite activities to do. YouTube has hundreds of videos/sound recordings with healing sounds. Search for specific topics such as “healing music for colds”, find the specific topic that applies to your symptoms, put in your headphones and enjoy. Many of these videos last for hours so you can fall asleep to the healing sounds.
Number 5 – Take Action Around our House and Work Areas
Consider the toothbrush. Throw out your toothbrush or sterilize it by boiling off the germs.
Sanitize. Wipe down surfaces with Clorox Wipes or if you’re into Essential Oils, get them out in force!
Diffuse essential oils or saturate tissues left around the house with healing Essential Oils of Lemon, Clove, Eucalyptus, Frankincense (expensive), Lavender, Oregano. Great blends for healing and wellness. Yum! The house or office smell great now.
Number 6 – Look Forward to Feeling Well!
Being sick with a cold or the flu can be annoying, discouraging, boring, frustrating – lots of negative feelings can arise when not feeling well just like with any injury to the body. Personally, every time I get sick, I cry with frustration yet in the end I am always gifted with an incredible insight about something that’s happening in my life – a resolution to a challenge, an upset I didn’t realize, a solution to a problem.
Be kind to yourself. Love yourself. Slow down. Everything will wait. Listen to the insights you will receive. Ask yourself what this cold or flu is teaching you. Be patient with yourself. A cold or flu is a temporary illness and it may just be testing your resolve.
Look forward to the future because the best thing about being sick is the days following when you are well.

I have to admit, measuring things has never been of much interest to me. I am more of a go with the flow, let’s see how it all works out kind of girl.
However, after I turned 45 and I realized that weight gain and weight loss was going to have to be something I would need to manage more than I had to in years’ previous and I began to embrace the whole measuring things for better results.
With regards to weight loss and health, consider Peter Drucker’s quote and consider deeply what it is with regards to your weight loss or health that you need to begin, or continue, or increase measuring for better, lasting results.
Measurements for weight loss and health may be:
- Measuring daily or weekly steps with a fitbit or jawbone
- Measuring water intake with your fitbit app or myfitnesspal.com
- Measuring food intake for calories, salt intake, sugar intake with myfitnesspal.com
- Measuring your blood pressure
- Measuring your blood sugar
- Measuring how much sleep you are getting
- Measuring your activity/exercise
- Measuring your hormone levels
- Measuring your BMI
- Measuring your muscle or lean body mass
- Measuring your weight
Measure what’s needed so you can Manage your results and accomplish your weight loss and health goals. Look at measuring as nothing more than a tool and the numbers as the data that is going to help get you towards what you want most.
